Curtis, New Dorp Football Players Donate Meals to Healthcare Workers
The young men of the Curtis High School and New Dorp High School varsity football teams recently served delicious meals with money they personally raised to healthcare workers battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fundraiser is part of the Starfish 5 Points Program’s “Make a Difference” campaign, and money raised was matched by Jason Garrett Starfish Charities, of which it is a branch. Garrett is a former NFL player and current New York Giants offensive coordinator.
Team players stepped up when the program challenged local Staten Island high school football teams to start a fundraiser to support their local communities.
The goal? To raise money locally and use that money to support local businesses, ultimately providing hot meals to local healthcare workers.
“I feel like the drive was so important because it really shows these doctors, nurses and essential workers that they are forever in our thoughts and that we care,” said Joshua Shervington, a rising senior on the Curtis varsity team. “It was our way of showing our appreciation and that we care, as a team.”
According to Starfish 5 Points Program’s spokesman Freddie Santana, a whopping $2,500 was raised by the Curtis and New Dorp football teams, which was used to purchase meals from both Kettle Black on Forest Avenue and Nunzio’s on Hylan Bloulevard, restaurants chosen by the respective teams.
Ultimately, more than 200 healthcare workers at RUMC and SIUH were treated to delicious meals.
