The last strategy session, led by Joseph Baratta of Curtis High School, provided an opportunity for an interactive dialogue in which academic athletic coaches were able to provide snapshots of their incredible programs. These talented educators shared not only best practices but communal challenges that they are determined to overcome as well.

“We wanted to do something for football players and provide something in the off-season, and I did research with what goes on at the college level and their year-round involvement in things,” said Baratta.
Curtis Warriors Making Big Gains
For several years the Warriors, like a few other Island programs, had an academic support system through the assistance of the National Football Foundation's Play it Smart program. But when funding for that dried up, Baratta went out in search of a way to fill the void.
